Failure ignitions occur when a breath alcohol testing device fails to detect a drink or drink being entered into it. This can be dangerous!
If you fail ignition, you will be required to come in for an evaluation by your healthcare provider. In the hospital, your healthcare provider will test your blood and breath for alcohol using the device.
If your alcohol level is below 0.05%, they will likely tell you it is safe to drive so long as you take your car driving and not too hard or too fast. After an hour of driving, if the alcohol level still does not rise, they will call it a failure and have you walk home or onto the road again.
These tests are very important to have because if you fail ignition, you could end up in the emergency room with very high levels of alcohol in your body.

You may have to go to court
If you fail the ignition interlock, you may need to go to court to ask a judge to punish your car for violating your curfew.
Interlock technology detects alcohol and drugs in the bloodstream and prevents the engine from running while an ignition key is in the driver’s seat. This prevents you from being able to drive your car home!
This technology is fairly new and has been around for about a year now, so there are still a few illegal cars with it. If your car has it, then you probably have no trouble getting into your house and driving yourself home if you want to!
If your car doesn’t have this technology, there are several things that can be done to get it. You can buy a device that fits over the keys and allows you entry into your own home.
You may have your driver’s license suspended
If you have an ignition interlock card, you may still be able to drive if your driver’s license is banned from the system due to failure to comply with a court ordered intervention program.
Interlock kits can prevent a vehicle from starting by linking to the car’s computer and ensuring that a sobriety test is met before turning the keys. Once it does, it remains in place for six months, during which time you must go to your car without it.
If you fail your intervention program, your vehicle may be restricted or even banned until you meet with a judge to determine if it needs to be sold. If you do lose your vehicle because of this law, you may need to find another way to get around town.
You may have to pay additional fines or fees
In case you fail your ignition interlock, you may have to pay additional fees. These include court fines, license reinstatement fees, or vehicle registration fees.
Fees can be significant and may depend on your previous violations. If you have past alcohol or drug possession or sales violations, the court may consider these as well as current possession.
If you fail your ignition interlock but do not have previous violations, there is no fee required. However, if you had a previous failure that resulted in a revocation or suspension of your driver’s license, then there are mandatory fee requirements.
If you lose your job and are unable to meet the payments, the court can order you to pay subsequent ignition interlock failures as a condition of probation.
Your ignition interlock device will be marked with a fail label
If your ignition interlock device fails, you may be required to take a break before you can start driving. Your vehicle must be shut off before the ignition interlock device can determine if you are driving and whether or not you are compliant with the law.
This break may be necessary if the device fails while attempting to detect alcohol in your blood. You may also need to take a break if it becomes defective, such as, when it stops working, you fail it, or it is replaced.
When the new one does not work correctly, you must take a second break! This is important to keep working at because if you stop trying, the alcohol in your blood will continue to hide or override the failed one.
If you fail ignition interlock twice in a year, there is an exception that allows you to drive with no restriction.
You must complete a retest with the ignition interlock company within 24 hours of the fail
If the ignition interlock fails, you may be summonsed back to the courtroom to have it corrected. This can be difficult and costly to correct a fail kit when your vehicle is not present at the court hearing to confirm correction.
This happens because at the time of the failure, your vehicle was undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation facility or jail where it was held before being transported to the rehab facility or jail.
It is very hard to correct a fail kit this way and even more difficult if you were unable to drive your vehicle home in order for them to correct it.
If you must take your vehicle back for correction, an ignition interlock company may use what they call a non-contact method of correction.
