55 electoral votes
While most people think of California as the biggest and most populous state, it doesn’t hold the top spot in electoral votes. Instead, it has 55 votes, or about a quarter of the presidential election’s electoral map.
California has been awarded its share of electoral votes since the city-state met its 17th president, John Quincy Adams, in 1824. That year, he was elected president and his running mate Ellen Bluhway was appointed to succeed him as vice president.
After being elected to their first term in office in 1828 and 1832, respectively, both presidents died before they could be re-elected. Their successors took their places until James Garfield was inaugurated in 1880 and 1880s John Quincy Adams was recognized as an equal partner with Franklin Pierce again.

Rich history
As the largest state in the country, California has a lot of electoral votes. This is thanks to two events.
1. The first was the 1789 adoption of the U.S. Constitution, which defined the number of presidential electoral votes a state could have. At that time, California had just one vote, so it received only one presidential election in 1824 and 1848.
2. The second was the 1950 reapportionment that added four new congressional districts and two Senate districts to give Californians an even full senate and house of representatives nationwide.
