How does it work?
The 460 electric water pump works by moving a seal in the engine, called the water pump timing chain, when cold temperatures require more space in the engine.
When the temperature rises again, or if your car is a year or two old, then the chain needs to be changed out. Because of this, you must maintain your car properly to have it work efficiently.
To service your car, you need to remove four bolts from underneath the hood and replace them with new ones. Then, you need to check and correct any worn out parts such as the seals or governor arms that keep pressure on the water pump when turning it on.
What are the drawbacks?
While the electric water pump is great for speed, it may not be the best choice for riders who like more control. Due to the varying speeds, this water pump may be tricky to control at times.
The height of the pump may also be difficult to judge at times. Because it is small, you need to reach up and touch the top to move it! This can be tricky when trying to maintain Speed at all times.
Another drawback is that this water pump does not come with a Oil Filter. You must purchase a new one every few months or years in order to maintain its quality. This can become expensive if you are keeping only one speed and one ride type!
Using only your feet to move this thing around can also create problems with foot injuries or wet shoes.
What vehicle uses an electric water pump?
The 460-cubic-foot (1.5L) Ford Taurus is one of the few vehicles that use an electric water pump. The pump allows the driver to remove a small amount of time to fill the tank and clean the radiator after each wash.
The motorized gear system in the Taurus uses two paddles to change the direction of water flow. One paddle turns up and down the water supply, while the other turns left and right.
When washing a car, you need to remember to turn on the car wash and open up alligator clips on each wheel to dry. Once that is done, empty and thoroughly rinse out the washer!

Can I use a car water pump in my truck?
Not exactly. A water pump is a universal car accessory, but not every vehicle has one. The one you connect to your truck is a 460-volt system, electric water pump.
There are two types of water pumps: the older, standard type and the newer, specialty type. The special type requires a longer extension tube to connect it to your truck’s water pump housing.
The old special type required you to remove the hose from the top of the pump and then connect the new hose from the bottom of the pump. With the new special type, you simply remove it and replace it with another brand’s replacement part.
Can I use a 460-volt water pump in my truck? The answer is yes! Both old and new special types work on trucks with standard or short extension pipes.
What is the difference between a Ford 460 and a Ford 460 Super Duty?
Both the 460 and 460 Super Duty engines are a 2-cycle, air-cooled combustion engine. However, the 460 has a larger impeller and more power with the 480 hp. The 460 has a wider cam profile and additional pounds of high-speed bearings to handle more peak horsepower.
The 460 is currently offered in both an eight- and ten-stall configuration with two different stroke lengths. The eight-stall version has an 8.0-inch stroke versus the seven.5–8.0–7.5–7.5 of the ten-stall model. The ten-stall model has a nine–inch stroke versus seven–9–7 of the eight model.
Both models have two spark plugs per cylinder, two oil jets, and two water injection systems to feed the engine.
Can I swap out parts between the two engines?
In theory, yes! In reality, not often. Neither engine is very tall, so unless you cut off the top of the pump to access the bearings, you’re stuck with exactly the same water pump and oil flow mechanism.
The electric water pump does have a couple of parts that can be replaced with different sizes or types, but not often.
The fan housing can be removed and exchanged for a non electric one or vice versa. The impeller can be removed and replaced with a new one or old one instead.
Both engines use the same drive train which includes the transmission, rear axle assembly, brakes and power distribution unit. The only difference is how the parts are connected and how they operate.
Are replacement parts available for the engine?
No, there are no replacement parts for the 460 engine. There are no parts coming from Ford for the water pump as it is a component that is installed on the engine.
As mentioned before, when the water pump fails, it can be very difficult to find a replacement part. Most places will just send you a new water pump which would be fine if it worked!
This is definitely a shame as some people may need a new water pump every few years to keep it in good condition and replace any leaking components. !
More often than not, when something like this fails on an older Ford model, there are quite a few alternatives available. There are some high quality replacement parts out there that work well enough to keep up with newer models.
