Some groups even hold Nornir-inspired Halloween parties, where members dress up as Norse gods or demons. This is a popular theme this year, since there is an upcoming movie about a goddess who takes on human form.
These parties are a great way to learn some harmless Trick-or-Treating customs, since almost everyone else in your neighborhood gets dressed up.
Cooler weather comes
In October, Maui has the rare opportunity to cool off in a snowfall. The area gets a few freezing nights per year, and October is the only month with enough clouds to form a sky cover.
There is also the added bonus of fall weather, which adds to the fun! There are many events planned for October, so don’t forget your winter clothing.
The most popular event in October is Haleakala International Monument Visitor Center & Activity Area Open House. This event typically draws over 150 people per event, making it a very special day.

Harvest season begins
In October, the sugarcane harvest begins in Maui. Called taro season, this is the first time that sugarcane and taro are harvested at the same time in a long-term cycle.
Usually, one crop of taro is planted per year, but due to growing seasons being maintained by astronomical rains and winds, two crops are normal. This is part of the culture as well as agriculture tradition.
In order to prepare your plot for harvest, you must begin cultivating early so that you have enough water and nutrients for your plants. You can also look for plants with beautiful long shoots in case they are lucky enough to survive the first freeze of winter.
Sugarcane takes several years to mature, so do not rush this process.

Fun fall festivals
Maui has many fun fall festivals, and they are a great way to meet other local Mauians and explore the season. Some of these festivals include the Kiaka Fall Festival, the Oahu Classic Fall Festival, and the Kapa Kaanapisé Fall Fair.
Kiaka Fall Festival is held on October 22nd from 5-8 p.m. at Kiaka Community Center, 525 Kaanapisés Point Rd., Kiakao. This festival features food llamas made with ingredients such as cashews, pumpkin seeds, rice cakes, cinnamon chips and more!
The Oahu Classic Fall Festival is held on November 2nd from 6-9 p.m. at Kiawe Palace State Hotel & Conference Center, 1817 Kiawe Point Rd., Ewa Beach. This festival specializes in traditional Japanese Japanese Halloween costumes!
The Kapa Kaanapisé fall fair is held on November 3rd from 1:30-5:30 p.m.
