1 gauge
The minimum gauge of steel needed for a fire pit is five-eighths of an inch (about a quarter of a inch) in thick. This is measured as the diameter of a fire ring.
Gauge steel can be hard to remove cleanly, so it is important to check the thickness of your steel every few months. If the steel is too thin, it can break down and lose its heat quickly.
Weekend warriors are likely looking for less expensive fire pits that are easier to assemble, so cheaper steel may be more affordable. Some cheaper fire pits are made with canvas or leather instead of metal. Canvas and leather do not hold up well over time, which is a no-no when looking at cost vs benefit.
These types of paper and leather heaters can possibly burn through in minutes due to how hot the charcoal can be.
2 gauge
A lower grade of steel used in fire pitauldron design and construction. This steel can be found in mixed grades, including 2-1/2 inch thick, three inch thick, and five inch thick. Each has a different effect on fire pitßheat.
We suggest you stay with 1-1/2 inch thick steel for your firepitßheating needs!
Why is less heat better? Why not have a barbeque grill or pizza oven? These are important parts of your firepit, so go with the best materials you have!
If you want lighter weight materials, those can be had too. Just be careful and do not make yourself look cheap by using cheap metal.
3 gauge
5/32-carat gold and steel
This metal has a rich, beautiful color that varies depending on what you mix it with. You can use it in jewelry, crafts, or even cookware! Many people use this as their fire pit material.
Another method is using 5/16-carat gold instead. This does not have as much of a difference in color as the 1/2-carat gold used in the first method, making it easier to determine the temperature of your fire.
Finally, some people use 10–knot carbon fiber instead of paper or blankets to protect the flames from weathering.
4 gauge
This is the most common fire steel steel. It is also the most expensive steel. Most people find that it is well-suited for beginner fire pokers.
4-gauge steel has a higher density than garnet or redstone, which means it takes longer for it to heat up and for it to stick. This can be a benefit when you are trying to create a hot spot in your fireplace before you are comfortable with how quick the fire is taking and burning.
When using 4-gauge steel in your fireplace, you must use at least two pieces of steel together for two different fires. This rule does not apply to redstone or garnet, which have no limit on how many fires you can have with one piece of steel.
You can purchase two different kinds of 4-gauge steel: garnet and redstone. Garnet has a higher density, making it take longer for it to heat up and for it to stick. Redstone does not have this feature, making it the more common of the two steels below.
5 gauge
A lower quality steel than 7 or 9, 5-gauge steel is more suitable for fire pitTHEta. Some refer to this grade of steel as low quality tubing!

6 gauge
A quarter of an inch thick, this alloy is known as 6-gauge steel. It has a distinctive gray hue and can be made into various lengths. These steel fire pit coals are usually six inches in length and have a rounded top and bottom.
QT is slightly heavier than CBW, which makes it more difficult to stack. However, this quality of steel makes it an affordable option for most backyarders. It can be bought in six-inch, eight-inch, and ten-inch lengths!
The six-inch coals are usually preformed to look like natural wood when they are cut. The eight-, ten-, and twelve-inch versions do not have this feature, but you can add them if needed. Either way, they look beautiful together!

7 gauge

Because of its versatility, 7-gauge steel is often used in craft projects instead of buying quality 8-gauge or thicker. Although it may cost more initially, the savings in heat and smoke production will last for many projects.
