Changing gears in your car is a fun, liberating experience. When you have the option to go manual or automatic, you can choose which way to take your car for a ride.
Swapping over from manual to automatic gearbox is an easy task, and one that does not require much time or expertise. This article will discuss how to do it!
Many cars now have the ability to switch between manual and automatic mode automatically when you start driving. This is thanks to automated driving software that reads your speed and gear position to determine if you want auto or manual transmission operation.

Remove fan assembly
If your car has a automatic transmission, you can change its motor and transfer it to a manual. This is an easy swap and you can do it in minutes!
To remove the fan assembly, first remove the radiator by removing two screws holding the rad assembly to the radiator. Then, pull off the rad assembly housing.
Use a screwdriver or something similar to carefully press on one side of the rotor and draw back enough material to allow removal. Repeat with other side of rotor. Remove rotor using same procedure as above.
To take off fan assembly, first remove two screws holding fan housing to fan bracket. Then, pull off housing away from motor using same techniques as before. Use something sharp (scrapers are good) to carefully cut through thermal bond between heat exchanger and motor to free it up.
Remove AC lines
If your car has a dual-line A/C system, you can swap the transmission between automatic and manual. This is an easy job and can give you more control over driving, or more speed!
The exception is if you replaced the evaporator with one that controls the air flow manually, then this job is out of the wiggle room.
If you have a conventional cooling system, then this swap is not an option. You would need to install a temp sensor to determine whether water was circulating through the system, and switch out the transmission for one that controls that.
If your car has a heat pump, there are no special rules for swapping transmissions. You can do it! Just be careful to keep track of which one goes where in case it needs replacement.
Remove power lines

Loosen transmission mount bolts
If you are going to do this swap, make sure to check your transmission mounts before attempting the swap. If they have come loose, then threading the new transmission mount through the transmission would be dangerous.
To fix this, you would have to modify your current transfercase and install a new bolt through the middle of it to secure the new mount in place.
If you are looking to do this swap in safe conditions, make sure to use a torque wrench and hardware that is properly fit for the job. If you can’t do that, then a small amount of torque wrench pressure will not change anything. You would need to pull and throw out the old one when changing into the new one!
A word of warning: When installing a new transfercase, make sure to keep an eye on its temperature.

Disconnect shifter cable from transmission
If you are going to do this swap, then it is recommended that you take the time to disconnect the shifter cable from the transmission. This allows you to remove the shifter for maintenance or replacement.
When performing a transmission swap, there are several parts that must be reconnected. These include relays, shift solenoids, and clutch pressure shoes. Without these components, it is impossible to switch transmissions.
To reconnect the shifting cables, first remove the Shift Linkage Boot and then gently pull off the Shift Linkage itself. Once those two pieces are off, you can easily pull off the cables by gently pulling on one end of each wire until they come out.
You can then remove both motors and case Assuming they did not break in a crash or severe weather conditions.
Remove tail shaft housing cover plate bolts
Removing the tail shaft housing cover plate can be done in several ways. Some methods are easier than others, but either one works.
Using a 1/2 inch drive screwdriver, de-coupling pin, or similar tool can be used to remove the bolts that hold the housing on. Alternatively, a nut and bolt can be used.
Either way, be sure to put new bolt and ring back on before putting the ring on! Using an allen wrench or Allen key should work as well.
Once removed, you will see three brackets that anchor the transmission. One bracket holds the case and two hold the cooler arms. You will need to remove these to swap transmissions!

Pull gear shift rod forward out of transmission hole
If you’re going for a manual transmission, this step is for you. If you are going for an automatic, do not do this step!
If you are going for the automatic, start with a stow behind the dash tool. If you have a tool box, that is great! Or if not, reach around and pull on the shift knob to get it out.
Then remove shift linkage assembly and remove gearshift rod.
