Check the gear shift
When your car is not going into gear, check the gear shift. When you do this, you will learn if it is in safe or unsafe gear or mode.
When your car is in safe gear, this means that it is unable to be shifted into another gear. This would be case if one side was stuck in park and you needed to shift into a higher gear to move forward.
When one has a higher gear, this implies that one can go faster than normal. If one needs a lower gear, then they can move back in the vehicle and have a higher speed without worrying about getting stuck or hurting themselves.

Push the car forward or backward
When your car is not going into gear, you can do several things. The first thing to do is remember which pedal the gears are on.
The left pedal corresponds to the upshift, and the right one to the downshift. Most vehicles have a thumbprint on top that corresponds to the shift paddle, too.
You can change gears by simply pushing or pulling on one of the pedals. When you do this, your vehicle will shift into first or second gear, respectively.

When this happens, it is usually because of a problem with the computer. A computer controls everything about your car such as how fast you are driving, how much gas you have left, and more.
If the computer is malfunctioned, then it won’t function properly and your car won’t go into gear or reset. You will have to have it repaired though, which can be expensive.
A quick way to fix this is to use a piece of paper and pencil and write down all of your settings and then take your car outside and try going over them on the ground until you find the one that doesn’t work.
Call a mechanic
If the problem is not something minor, you should call a local car dealership or mechanic. Car problems are very frequent, and sometimes it is the solution to the problem that is wrong.
Many times brand new cars have broken or bad components. Therefore, when you purchase a new car, it is checked at purchase time by the manufacturer and/or distributor to see if it needs changed or updated.
This applies to vehicles purchased new or new with a contract and if the vehicle needs repaired, sold, or exchanged.
If your car has a year/year warranty, then there may be nothing your mechanic can do for you.
Know when to get it fixed right away
Getting your car fixed right away can be dangerous. If you have a car, your car is your home too!
If the mechanic needs you to fix something, he or she will charge more for later fixes. Therefore, you should always bring your car to the dealership when needed.

Have the transmission checked
If you’re having trouble getting your car to go into gear, the transmission may need to be checked. There are a few reasons your car doesn’t seem to get into gear.
Wrong transmission fluid level
Some transmissions require a specific fluid level to function. When this spot is void of fluid, then it may need to be checked. Checked transmissions can cost around $40-$50, so if you have one of these malfunctioning cars, you should take it in.
Corrossion or seal replacement
If the problem is with the engine block and revises when the car is pushed, then a corrossion or seal replacement is needed. These cost about $80-$100 and would have to be done before and after the repair of the transmission issue.
Is your oil level okay?
Most people check their oil level when their car is parked for the night to make sure it is at least half full. This is to ensure that the engine gets a chance to circulate some oil.
If your car doesn’t have an oil level sign, then you can check your oil by taking off the steering wheel and putting it back on. You should see some liquid coming out of the turn signal housing and into the oil.
To put the steering wheel back on, you must remove a small Allen Allen Allen head head head head head bolt bolt bolt which is located underneath where the handle connects to the wheel.
