In order to be most effective, you can trade gear with other players to find out what works for them. Or you can just listen to your gut feeling about whether or not something is worth investing in.
If you are worried about losing your item level because of peers who are below your level in item level, it is worth looking into joining a guild.
Know your strengths
When it comes to playing PVP, your main source of damage or defense is what gear you have. If you are a high rusher, then you should invest in high damage weapons and armor. If you are a defensive player, then buy defensive armors to help your team hold their ground against other teams.
