How To Remove Automatic Transmission

Changing a automatic transmission is an involved process. Luckily, for people who are not mechanically inclined, the change can be done quickly and easily.

Some transmissions have a “dry transfer” feature where the transmission can be put in reverse without first removing it from the car. This feature is usually not accessible until the car is removed from the manufacturer.

When installing a new automatic, make sure to install it on a street with no curves or hills to help prevent any possible damage to the Automatic Transmission. Also, make sure to follow all of the instructions carefully and always use fresh ethanol-based gels or ATF as recommended.

Apply the brakes

If you are having a hard time putting enough pressure on the transmission to shift out of park, try putting more brake force behind the car at full speed. This will take some experimenting and practice, but eventually it will help.

Once you can do this safely, try trying a softer touch with the brakes and then the gas to help make it easier to shift out of park. Once you have this down, add in spirited driving and you are supersonic!

When changing gears in an automatic transmission vehicle, there are two main ways to get into gear. One is to use your left foot and one is to use the pedal.

Push the car forward a few feet

if you can’t push the car forward a few feet, then your automatic transmission is too far down in the transmission.

If the transmission is slipping, rumbling, or seem to be reluctant when you need to shift into first, then it isnecessary to remove it.

There are two different ways to take off the auto transmission. The most common way is to use a floorboard removal tool. This can be expensively purchased at a autoparts store, but it is highly recommendable.

The other method is to use an anti-clockwise (CCW) pull out tool. This one does not need to be stored in a protective case, just in case it needs to be used.

Put the car in park and apply the brakes

If you are able to put the car in park and apply the brakes, then you have more time to work with. First, you must remove the transmission.

The most common way to remove a automatic transmission is by using a torque wrench on all of the mounting nuts and then removing the transmission from the car using a jack (or small lift) and dolly.

Some cars require special tools while removing the transmission. If your vehicle does not have a Torque Wrench, there are several brands that make similar ones that look like one. Make sure to buy ones that are steel or plastic-assemled so they do not get mixed with the metal parts of your transmission.

Once you have removed the transmission, make sure to clean all of the Transmission Fluid from both it and your gearbox.

Take your foot off the brake and hold the clutch in

This allows the transmission to shift out of first gear.

Now hold the car at its maximum acceleration and release the clutch. This allows the transmission to shift out of first gear.

After doing this, release the clutch and let the car settle into its new speed. Now you can remove your transmission washer!

This can be done as soon as your car has a automatic transmission, because then there is no need for this manual method.

Move the shifter back and forth until you feel it click

If you cannot find the automatic transmission, you can try removing it yourself. To do this, first remove the front passenger seat to get your legs out of the car. Next, shift the car into drive and put your foot on the floor to shift into park.

Now you can start working on removing the transmission. First, turn off all car electronics including headlights and windshield wipers. Remove two screws under the carpet on each side of the transmission and lift out. Repeat this step for other side.

After doing that, take some 13-24 lock cylinder pliers and gently pull off both casings underneath the metal cover that contains all three transmissions (the third one is hidden under a cluster of other components).

Shift into first gear and hold the clutch in while you start the car

This will stop the transmission from shifting into park or in drive mode when you start the car.

If your car has a automatic transmission, you must do this step before driving!

If your transmission has a change mode indicator, remove that as well to ensure it does not transition back to manual after shifting into park or out of gear.

To remove the transmission, first remove the tailgate using a tool like pry-tape or needle nose depressors. Then, raise the floorboard and disconnect the electrical connector at the bellhousing. Finally, pull off the pin that holds in the retainer forthe shiftLock assembly.

Repeat this process until you can shift smoothly without holding the clutch

If the problem is not fixed by this process, you can try repeating the shift pattern in another gear, moving to a different gear, or moving into another gear.

Once you can do this without shifting out of the first gear, you know your transmission is working properly and your car is in good condition. Next step is to check the differential and/or chain.

If there are no problems with your automatic transmission, there are many healthy ways to repair it. Try one of them first to be sure!

Some people use heat treatment or deep maintenance strategies before going under the knife.
