Opening the hood on a Mercedes is an art form. You can give yourself a pretty good guess at how to do it right with this article, but if you get stuck, try watching our video above!
Opening the hood is a sign of power. You want to be able to see and listen while you do it, so we suggest starting with this article and working your way up to the video.
There are several ways to open the hood on your own. We will concentrate mostly on our mobile app, as that is the easiest way to do it. However, you can also use a screwdriver or some other small tools if you have them!

Unsnap the hood latch
Unsnap the hood latch by pulling it straight back toward the chassis. This will release the clip that holds it in place. You will have to repeat this process if you need to remove it again.
Now you can open and close the hood as needed!
How to Close Hood on Mercedes C300
If you need to close the hood in an emergency, here are a few tips:
Use one hand to hold the clips in place and pull together with the other hand. This will also release any pressure on either side of the wheelhouse which may help you maneuver out of a jam.
Use something heavy, like a brick, to prop up against so that you can throw the clips away.
Pull up on the latch
If you can’t figure out how to open the hood on your Mercedes C300, this article will help!
Mercedes-Benz introduced a new feature called the Closer, which allows you to pull up on the latch and open the hood from outside the car. This is only possible with the Closer mode enabled, however.
When in Closer mode, a small green light on top of the hood indicates it is in operation. When this light glows, pull up on the latch to open it. You can also do this by pulling down on a handle inside of the car or by using a tool like a screwdriver or knife.
Once opened, remove any obstacles or wires that could be in the way of access to the motor and transmission. Then, pull up on the flap to reveal whatever parts are inside.
Find the release button
When you press the dealer’s button, your Mercedes will open the hood. You will see a few seconds before the hood closed and after it opened.
You want to do this as quickly as possible so that you can retrieve your car if something goes wrong.
You may think that you know where the release button is, but you may be wrong. It may be under the passenger foot-peg, near the gas tank or brake pedal, or even inside of your car.
Once you find it, push and hold down on it for about a second to pull out the release mechanism. Then, pull up and open the hood!
Bullet point reinforced: When opening your hood too slowly or holding it up for too long, you could end up breaking something. To prevent this from happening, make sure to keep an eye out for the release button and open and closed quickly.
Push down on the button
When the hood is closed, you can hold a button on the inside of the door to prevent it from being opened. This is useful if you need to take something out or add another item to your list of things to bring when opening the hood.
To unlock the hood, you must push down on the button for about a minute and then pull up. It may take a few tries, but eventually you will get it open!
This feature is useful if you need to drive fast or if someone else drives your car because you are not very experienced with opening and closing cars’ hoods.
It is also helpful when teaching others how to open and close cars’ hoods.
Lift the hood up
If you’re unable to do so on your own, then this next step is for you to do. Once you’ve opened the hood, taken out the battery and unfolded the paper, then here is the next step.
Now that you have opened the hood, take out the battery and fold up the paper. This will help protect the underside of the hood from debris.
Now that you have done that, raise the hood up and look under it! If there is something wrong, or if you need to add some Compound Oil or Gravel Dust to keep it clean, do so now to keep it working properly.
Shelling out some money for a Mercedes C-class repair could save you from having to drive with burned tires or poor steering, both of which are uncomfortable and unsafe.
Make sure there is not a lock holding it down
If your hood does not open by itself, you will need to make sure that a lock does not hold it closed. This could be by using a key, padlock, or anything similar.
A key can be inserted into one of the four holes on the top of the hood to open it. If you do not have a key, you can use a safety pin or something similar to pop the button on top of the hood.
If you have a padlock, then you can use a screwdriver to pry it off. If you have an automatic locking system with a switch, make sure it is on before trying to open the hood.
Check the oil level
When driving at high speeds, the C-class can cause oil to flow back into the engine due to friction. This can lead to poor performance or a busted oil cooler.
To prevent this, check the oil level when changing lanes! That way if you drive your car until it falls off, it will be covered by Mercedes’ warranty.
To do this, pull up your car’s belt-length and then turn the car’s steering wheel up and down. If the oil level is full, turn the car’s steering wheel up more to open the hood. If it is low, turn the car’s steering wheel down to close it.
Replace any damaged seals
If you have to replace any seals on your hood, perform this step before driving or while driving. If you do not have a seal to replace, you can still open and close the hood using this method.
To seal and open the hood, first remove the gasket around the edge of the hood. Then, use a block of drywall or an old janitorial cloth to push up on the inside of the hood and slide it off.
To put it back, first apply some adhesive around the edge and then carefully pull it up and away from the car. You may have to do this two times to guarantee full coverage!
These steps prevent water from forcing its way into your vehicle as well as replacing any damaged seals.
