These toys are typically made from heavy cardboard or plastic, and have a exposed core. The core is filled with foam that can be wrapped around the barrel of your handgun to mimic the handle.
The challenge with these toys is that you must know how to use it properly before you can make any shots!
The easiest way to make a tackling dummy is using two regular-sized dummies: one for the hands, and one for the feet. If you want to up the ante, you can add some padding or leather goods to round out the look.

Remove the head
When you’re ready to make your tackle dummy, first remove the head. You can do this by gently slipping a piece of masking tape over the top of the mouth and holding on to keep it in place as you pull it off.
Remove the soft, pliable neck and then easily pull out the legs. Your tackle dummy will look like a dead fish or piece of lumber!
Making your own has two goals: first, you can easily buy some questionable materials; and second, you can make your material yourself. Many people use lake trout or other cold-water fishes as their target material.
Cold-water fish are not an easy target to fake.
Rip out arms and legs
When your monster is big enough, make a mark at the top and bottom of its body. This is where the glue will dry and stick the monster to the ground.
Then, cut off its legs and wings, leaving just its head, hands, and feet. Cut off the headressing material at the neck to let your monster breathe.
Bury it in a large container of water until it dries. Take it out a couple of days to check it to see if anything has worked itself free. If so, you need to start over!
Making your tackling dummy is an easy way to make your home more dangerous. You can do this with your little monsters first or next week after you finish cleaning up! Either way, you will feel good for helping them learn their skills.
Find a football helmet
When you’re trying to make your tackling dummy look authentic, the first step is finding a football helmet. You can buy one at a sports store or online.
Make sure the padding is thick enough to hold your weight when you put your dummy on. A thinner pad will not hold up as well as a heavy one.
Next, find some cheap artificial fur or hair you can cut into lengths. You can buy these at any hobby store or clothing store. Just make sure they are clean and fresh hair!
Last, find some old footballs or another equivalent toy that looks like a good fit.
Find shoulder and knee pads
When you are making your tackling dummy, look for shoulder and knee pads that are about 2 inches thick. These pads will help keep your dummy in place as you make your tackle.
You will need to buy these on a supply chain, so do not get too excited until you have this vital piece of equipment.
Many hobbyists buy a few pieces of equipment to test the waters before investing in a full set. You do not have to have all of these pieces but it will help improve your playability and safety!
Try buying some shoulder and knee pads together to save money together they may be bought in shops or online here.
Find shoes for the doll
When you have your doll, it is time to find her shoes. She will need a little support for her feet to stand in. You can buy some fun looking shoes, or if you are a fan of the doll, you can create her own.
You can find many ways to support the shoes on your doll. One way is to use some thick paper towel and thread it through the shoe and pull up. Another way is to use rhinestone glue and stick the shoe on.
To make her own shoes, cut off one edge of a pair of foot-socks and roll up the sock around the foot with the sock rolled up inside another sock. Then, cut off another edge of each sock and fold them over with them matching up just below the foot. Put some padding or sheepskin under them to protect the bottom of the feet.
Use fabric paint to color the football helmet and shoes
You can use fabric paint to create your tackling dummy. The paint allows you to change the color of the football and shoes makes it a little more customizable!
Fabric paint is a great way to make your tackling dummy. There are many brands and they vary in price, but not too much quality either. We used Playsports Painting brand which was about $2 for the entire set.
There are many websites that sell the attacking player’s helmet and shoes, but they are different prices on each item.
Spray paint the shoulder and knee pads
When drilling through the foam, make sure that the paint does not get into the wood underneath. If you want to add some texture to your dummy, then do this!
Using a paintbrush or piece of scotch-tape, apply a little paint on one side of the pad and leave it there until you drill through. Then, move onto the next pad!
This tutorial is for a male dummy, but if you want to make a female dummy, just change what is mentioned below.
Female dummies usually have thinner foam on their stomach and legs to decrease strength needed to hold the pad in place. Using an identical process as above, apply some painted material on one side of the pad and leave it there until you drill through.
Decide on which team you want to be
In team games, you decide which team you want to be on. In tag, you are a tagger and in cat-and-mouse, you are a chase dummy.
In tag, you are a runner and in cat-and-mouse, you are a dummy in the pursuit of the catch. In both games, your goal is to escape by hiding or fleeing from the target.
In game night, you host or participate with your friends, so there is no real separation between who is what team. You just play together!
Team games make more sense to me than just individual ones do. I find that when I am trying to focus on my target and hiding or fleeing from the person or thing I am chasing, but also being aware of my surroundings and how others work as teams makes me feel more prepared for whatever situation arises.
