In 1995, 2006, and 2010, Air Force won National Championships; in 1991 it was not played due to a players strike.

Their most successful period was between 1975 and 1995 when they had seven consecutive winning seasons

The Air Force football team is not the same team today that existed back then. They were a very successful team over the years, earning four consecutive U.S. Army National Championship titles from 1975- 1979.

Those teams were led by legendary head coach John Madden who stepped down in 1985 after 14 years as head coach. He continued to lead the team as an assistant for several years before becoming their head coach in 1987 when his former player, John Madden, retired and left him the job.

After only one season as head coach, he was fired and replaced by Ted Marchibroda who was hired from Colorado State University. Marchibroda would spend twelve seasons as Air Force football coach before stepping down in 1999 due to health issues.

He was followed out of Falcon Stadium by Ted Marchibroda who would remain at Colorado State until retirement in 2005 where he spent most of his time coaching high school football.
