Sump pumps are a valuable tool in the fight against water intrusion and water damage. A sump pump ensures that water not only stays within your home, but goes out as well.
This device uses the rising and falling of groundwater as it moves through a system to generate electricity. When this system is disturbed, such as when water passes through a pipe, the electricity generated passes through the device and into a power supply, which turns on a fan or air compressor to raise water levels in affected areas.
These devices can cost more than average homes, depending on their size. Sump pumps are typically double-walled to prevent leaking. They must be functional and reliable for years before an annual check is done.
This type of check is important because if it has failed, excess water may travel outside the home and away from sources of irrigation or drainage.
Check water level in basement
If the ground in your basement is relatively dry, check the water level in the basement tank. Most underground tanks are around five to six feet in depth, which would make it look like there is enough water to keep the animal safe.
If there is too much water, then a sump pump will fail. This system uses a rotating shaft to circulate water. If this fails, then the animal will not be able to stay hydrated.
Also, if the tank is low or empty, then a sump pump will fail due to insufficient circulation. This happens more often than you might think! Make sure you have enough money to have a new one installed, and keep an eye out for signs that it is failing.
Run water in basement
If the band is out and your neighbor is coming to fix the sump pump, then you have another reason to run water in your basement. This will help prevent water damage to the house and yourself while you wait for them to come.
This can be done by having a large spigot in your basement that leads into a cess-pit or irrigation system for the home. The water from this must be cared for and maintained, or it will dry out and break down underground pipes.
A second option is to connect a conventional sump pump with an underground network of pipes. This way, if one fails, the other does too.
General tips: If both of these fail, neither one will work until the land below it changes conditions or new infrastructure comes along.
Pressure wash basement floor
If your sump pump is working, then the only way to check its pressure is by cleaning the floor beneath it. Otherwise, you can add another one as needed.

Install backup system
If the main system fails, the next step is to install a backup system. This can be any type of system, including a water heater or cooling systems.
Most homes have at least one water valve in the facility, called a hot water supply. These typically turn on cold water when needed such as washing dishes, gardening, and cooking.
Another source of water is found in your home’s plumbing. An exception to this is if your home features only cold-water use, like washing dishes or bathing. Then there is no need for a second source of water!
When one source of water fails, another may come along to take its place. This can happen safely or it can be an emergency situation! It all depends on where the supply of water has gone.
Change pump parts regularly
If your sump pump is working, then it is needed to be changed out every few months. There are many companies that sell replacement parts for sump pumps.
Sump pumps are expensive, so if the manufacturer is charging you money to keep your system working, then you should be looking at new equipment every few years. Buyer beware! Many times companies will offer a discount or a warranty on their sump pump system, but check with your local government department to see if it is recognized.
Checking the pump every month can save you from having to buy new equipment twice in a year-or even two-which can cost more! You also can get some savings by buying new equipment twice and buying from different companies, as long as your systems are compatible.
Maintain proper sump basin level
As mentioned above, a failing sump pump can result in water being forced out of the system through an improperly low basin.
This can be preventable by having a higher level of water in your sump basin. An easy way to do this is to add a second flooring layer between your current cover and the sump basin.
Add about an inch of water around your cover to make it floatationally secure. Another way to keep an eye on this is by checking the water level every few days!
If it is low, add some more water from the sink or from your sump basin. If it is high, take down the cover and replace it! This may require some strong tools or tools that you do not have, but it is still good practice.
Use a sump pump alarm
A sump pump alarm telecommunications device is available at most home improvement centers. It can be programmed to detect a blocked or overfilled sump pump and notify your home insurance provider or warranty service.
This allows them to come out and replace the pump if it fails. If your home is equipped with one, you can also use this.
If your home does not have a sump pump, then there are two main ways to avoid this problem. Use a water-based alarm system or use an air-powered pumping system.
Install a secondary pump and battery backup system
If the main pump fails, the backup system can be installed in minutes. The secondary pump can be any size or type of pump and it will charge a battery to keep operation of the sump system alive.
