Manual Transmission Goes Into Gear But Wont Move

It is important to know when your car is in gear because that means your transmission has shifted into park or neutral.

Some people complain that their gearshift feels heavy when it is in park or that the parking brakes don’t feel strong. Neither of these things are big problems unless you need to get out quickly!

If you ever need to shift into a higher gear or need more power, there are special transfer cases called ballscrews that require you to manually move them into place. These must be used with care, though- if one side does not shift into place, the case may break and cause a loss of control.


Problem with clutch

Most problems happen when the clutch is new. As soon as the driver presses on the accelerator, the engine starts to turn but does not move. This is because once the clutch is engaged, it cannot be disengaged.

This can be a problem if you need to get out of a vehicle quickly. If you try to do so, you will be forced to use the brake or accelerator to release the clutch. Neither one works well in this situation!

The solution is to take it apart and check all of your parts. There may be a problem with one of them that needs to be fixed. If that is the case, you will have to replace it.

Problem with brake

When the brake is applied, the transmission goes into gear but does not move. The cause may be poor installation or wiring.

If the brake is released, the transmission moves again. If this happens, look for broken wire or connection to engine blocker or computer. If still occurs, contact machine shop for new part exchange warranty.

A broken brake may appear to work as it should when engaged, however when moving it must be changed out due to wear and conditions in the house or yard that causes movement.

Problem with shifting

When changing gears, the car will not move. This can be annoying!

Sometimes, when you shift into another gear, the car will move and then shift back into that new gear. This is normal. Your transmission is working fine.

Other times, it may need to be replaced. The transmission may be setting in Park or Drive mode when this happens. It may be frozen in either P or D mode which is not good enough to drive!

A transmissions problem can be hard to diagnose as there may be no break light or indicator light coming on or off. There may be no change in weather conditions such as heat or cold weather respectively causing the person having the transmission problem to say nothing has changed.

Transmission problem

In this case, the transmission is not going into gear but won’t move. It may do this while driving or if you remove the car to take apart the transmission.

When it does shift, it will do so quickly and smoothly. You will know it has moved because the car will rattle and shift solid and quick. If you have a manual transmission, you will need to use a tool called a shifter remote to reset the transmission.

The culprit may be a broken or faulty shift lever. A broken or faulty shift lever can lead to a poor shifting experience which can turn into worse roadsing when rain starts to fall. Either way, you should have no trouble getting your car back on the road if there is just an emergency situation.

Engine problem

This can happen when you are driving at a fast speed or if your vehicle is a certain size. If it does, then you need to take it to the car dealership and have it fixed.

Electrical issue

In the same way that furnace thermostat is triggered by outside temperature, electrical heaters have a temperature programmed in. These can be set to warm or cool spaces via a programmable thermostat.

If you have one of these models, there are two ways to fix it. You can buy a wire stuck in the body that controls the auto turn off feature or you can purchase a wire replacement kit. Neither of these solutions require taking off the cover as they are self-righting.

Brake issue

Another issue people are having trouble with is the brake. When this happens, it can be difficult to tell when you turn the car on.

When it happens, it will immediately cause your car to go into gear but not move. You will have to manually put your car into gear by pressing the accelerator pedal or by simply walking away from your car.

It can be very frustrating to struggle with this and eventually have to replace the brake pads or consider a brake job. Luckily, these problems are quite common and intermittent depending on how hard you drive, how much you brake and how often so they are not that expensive to fix.

The easiest way to check if your brakes go into gear is when you take a big step back with one hand on top of your car and the other hand steps back with the same amount of force with another step back. If your cars goes into gear then that’s proof enough.

Clutch issue

Another problem is the clutch. When the transmission goes into gear but does not start to move, this can be fixed by removing the shift boot and checking the clutch.

If it is fine, then purchase a new one and have it installed! If there are any cracks or breaks in it, then the car will not start or slow down when you try to drive it.

Wheelies and rocket gashes are signs of a broken clutch so look out for that! If you feel that your car is not holding a steady speed, then add some more pressure to the clutch to get it going!

Lastly, check your brake pads. When you look at your brake pads, they should be about six inches long.
