If a clay maker used an incompatible Plasticizer, their polymer could not harden properly and possibly break. If this happened, you would have nothing but soft polymers.
The second reason to mix the materials is so that you can control the temperature of the mixture.
Bake the clay to set it
Once your polymer clay is cool, it is time to bake it! This means putting it away for the night to let it set. This can be fun or frustrating depending on your level of success.
If you are more successful then next time try some of your favorite colors to color the clay! If you get really good at this and use very sophisticated colors, you could create a line of businesss. You could make polymer clay jewelry, polymer clay cosmetics, and/or sculpting supplies.
Or if you fail, then at least you learned how to make sure your next attempt is safe and reliable.
Finish your piece
Once your polymer clay is made, it is time to finish your piece. You can do so by rolling or patting the clay together or knitting it together, or both!
Both of these methods add a little step-away from just throwing your clay together and calling it art. Both give you the chance to personalize your piece and make it more unique.
Rolling works better if you have some luck rolling your pieces out first. Picking one piece that looks good and knitting them together is faster than rolling and failing to knit them together.
Either way, take your piece outside to enjoy the weather conditions before trying any of these! Doing either outside of inside will affect which method works better for you.
Hang it to dry
When the polymer clay is completely dry, let it hang out of shape until February- February. This allows the clay to harden and network with the air around it.
Now is the time to cut it! Use a sharp knife or wire brush to cut the clay into squares, triangles, and any other shapes.
Make sure to cut through the bottom of the clay so that you do not break down your heating source. Once you have shaped your Clay, let them dry thoroughly before moving onto the next step.
Mixing up your Clay can be done using different types of media in different combinations.
Paint it
Once you have your mould, it is time to paint it! As we mentioned earlier, white is the classic colour for polymer clay. You can also add some rouge or blush cheeks, a soft texture or a more dramatic texture.
The way to paint polymer clay is very similar to painting acrylic paintings. You start with a very wet polymer clay, you add your paint and then you roll! You should roll the clay out quite thinly at this stage to allow for the paint to dry properly.
Once that has happened, you can roll it up into a ball and allow it to set! That takes about six hours per day, every day.
Bake it again
If you make a clay piece and it is not holding shape, you can return to the oven again and again to make it stronger. This sometimes happens if your first few pieces were just warm or soft.
Some polymer clay won’t bake well if left outside for an extended period of time. These are ones that are hard and/or brittle, so they need to be put back in the oven to soften and then bake. These can be refrigerated or frozen until you want to make another piece with them.
If you want your clay to be even more flexible, you can add some water or other liquid material into your clay as it bakes. The liquid will escape as steam, which will cause it to bend even more.
