Once a year, check the water flow pressure and volume by opening the sprinkler system valve. If the system is working properly, water will come out of the sprinkler heads and panes of glass in the valve mechanism, indicating that enough water is being passed through to keep plants moist.

If less than half of the sprinkler heads and panes of glass are wet or damp looking, then there is probably too much water passing through them. This can be fixed by purchasing a bit more sprinkler head liquid or checking and changing the quantity of diagonals in each head.

Test all dry standpipes

As previously mentioned, fire sprinkler systems can have stood pipes or lines that connect the system to the outside world. These lines or pipes can be used for electrical cords, or lines for service features such as toilets or showers.

To ensure your standpipe system is working properly, you should check all of these connected lines weekly. A quick way to do this is to wire up a homemade scale and measure two different outlets at once- one hot and one cold!

You can also test the water coming out of the standpipe by putting a small amount of water on a paper and checking whether it heats up.

After a month, if you have some spots that are dry out quickly, then by using a little bit of water and placing it in the sprinkler head for an hour or so, you can add more water and keep it running.

At three months, if there are no signs of stopping or dry spots on your homes protection, then buy enough to last the year.
