Though most elkHunters hunt in season, there are exceptions. Sometimes a fall or winter hunt is more enjoyable than a summer hunt. Luckily, there are many beautiful hunts every year!
Elk can be tricky to stand in comparison to other deer species. They have a longish frame with heavy legs, so you must find a good match for your height and hide thickness. Also, they may have thick hair on their frame which may not be visible to you until it is too late.

Ammunition
“Ammunition” is one of the most important parts of a elk hunting arsenal. While most people are familiar with either buck or boomer talon or soft point arrows, each has its own special use.
Buck and boomer talon arrows are designed for close-range, heavy shooting. These arrows will usually penetrate deeply and stay in place! Boomer arrows are designed for longer ranges and more predictable results.
If you are going to shoot only one type of arrow, make it a boomer! Both types will work beautifully together in your quiver.
Boomer missiles can sometimes get a little tricky to retrieve when shot at long range, so it is helpful to have some backup shots! If you do not have any bnal missiles, no problem! You can make some backups with soft tip or gut hooking arrows.
Scope
An important part of elk hunting is finding and using a elk rifle. There are many types of rifles that are designed for elk hunting, and only one without the scope is called an Elk Gun.
Most guns classified as Elk Rifles have a shorter length of animal sought after as the target. A shorter target may also facilitate a better chance of hitting what you want to shoot.
A longer target may also help spread the impact of the shot more effectively, making it more likely to kill an animal. A Hunter’s Scope is used when searching for an animal at close range. These scopes have short length bars so it is easy to put on and take off quickly.

There are many ways to use a bi-pod. You can sit at your gun with a Magazine Release on your finger and shoot away! You can also stand with the bi-pod adjusted and shoot away! You can also lay down with it attached and adjust where the rifle or shotguns objective lies.
Having both hands free to adjust the scope and/or stock allows for really versatile shots.
Range finder
A range finder is a device that helps you determine your position in relation to other objects. The range finder is built into some firearms, while others do not have this feature but therangefinder still can be used!
For example, a rifle’s scope allows you to determine distance and direction by how far the target appears to be from you. A handgun has a similar feature.
Whether a range finder is built into a firearm or not, the important part is that it has a picture of what area of the earth it represents on its screen.
This picture can help you know if there are trees or hills around where you are hunting, because if it is an woods area then there will be some cover for your animal to hide in.
Holster
When carrying a handgun in your v-leather deer hunting vest, you must use a holster. There are many brands of v-leather holsters, but we will focus on the Remington SRL Holster here.
The SRL is a semi-automatic handgun with a medium frame and short barrel. It has an 11mm gap between the front and rear of the grip, making it an intimate weapon to carry.
The Remington SRL is a good choice for elk hunting due to its size and shape. It is only about 3⁄4 of an inch thick, making it easy to conceal in cover. It also has a small profile that does not call attention to itself when wearing it.
Another option is the Glock 27 Holster. Both these handguns have long barrels, 11mm gaps between them, and small frames! These require more room in your vest to fit them comfortably.
Hand sanitizer
You can never be too careful about this! Hand sanitizer is a must have item for any hunting environment. Even if you do not hunt during the summer season, you can still protect yourself from disease and bacteria with a good tip!
Elk are known to spend much time browsing through thickets, finding all sorts of bugs and nutrients they needed to grow. Because of this, it is important to keep your body clean by using water-based hand sanitizer.
SomeBugz also recommend using an alcohol-based clean-up product instead of just water-based cleanser, but we would only recommend this if you are also aware of your animal’s diet and type of meat they might be eating.
