Double Process Hair Color At Home

Making your own double process hair color is a fun way to spend a couple of hours. There are many ways to do double process hair color, so there is no wrong way to use it.

Double process hair is made by first adding inervatives and coloring agents in two separate steps. The first step is to apply powdered natural brown food products or powdery black ones to the hair. The second step is to dye the resulting color.

This can be done on the cheap, but better budgeters should still try it. It is also possible to buy double process kits, where the second process is just dry shampooing. This can save some money in the long run!

The most common way to make double process at home is by using one base product for dye and forating agents. These are usually sold together as a kit, where you purchase the bag of one item and five of the other.

Process two: Apply color of your choice to clean, dry hair

This is the more expensive and time consuming method. When using this method, you need to first determine if you have very dry or very wet hair.

If not, then try it out! Place a small amount of color on damp hair and let it sit for at least five minutes before pulling up a hairstyle. If your hair is dry, then go for it!

If you have some colored hairs just due to weather or genetics, then try out some mediums or lightens colors slightly. Go for richer shades instead of fair ones as these will show more color over time.

Paramount colors such as red or burgundy look great on, but may require more frequent retouching due to them fading quickly. Generalized colors such as orange or blue work well too as they are neutral enough to work with many looks.

Wrap hair in plastic wrap or put into a tub filled with color solution

This is the most dangerous way to do double process hair color at home. The wrap can prevent your hair from reaching its color and/or remove some of the color from the outer layer of hair. It can also cause your hair to dry out or break during either the time it is wrapped or during washing.

During wrapping, you must be very careful to not pull at the hair as it is wrapped. If you have to cut some of the wrap off, then stop wrapping until new wrap has dried and protected the hair.

Once done, you can start enjoying your new look! To keep up with volume and length, we recommend using good hair care practices such as daily washing and conditioning your new double process hairstyle.

Leave in for the recommended time

When doing double process at home, it is important to leave your hair color in for the recommended time. This is because the first step in double process hair color at home is to set the temperature.

Setting the temperature of a dye set can be difficult. Heating the dye slightly more than recommended can result in a less intense color and less dryness of the hair. To compensate for this, some use a different heat source such as a dryer or curling iron.

Using less of the dye than what is recommended results in a fresher look and less dryness of the hair.

Rinse out both color solutions thoroughly

This method is for those who are more advanced in hair colorology or who have very specific hair colors want to try at home. Both Ceasars C-Paste and Ombre Kits contain instructions for this.

Both products contain sodium carbonate, a whitening agent. When mixed with an equal proportion of red or brown food coloring and/or natural shampoo, it becomes a dye.

Sodium carbonate is relatively new to the home color industry. It takes some trial and error to find the right mix of sodium carbonate and colored water, but once you do, you can experiment with different amounts of coloring to create different colors.

Some people use double process hair color at home as an introduction to color theory or as a way to learn how to control the amount of dye in their finished product.

Apply your after-color treatment or conditioner

After coloring the hair, the next step is to wait at least four weeks before you can let your friends, family, or anyone else comb or style it. This is when the color starts to set and act as a deterrent for being cut or styled.

After four weeks of waiting, you can begin to experiment with styling and cutting your hair. But be careful! Many hairstylists and people who work with hair have restrictions or guidelines about how hair can be styled.

Wash and style as usual

Now is the time to showcase your new hair color and/or style. Now is the time to test out how your color will look with other colors and/or styles to see if it works!

When doing a new hair color, be sure to get a light-medium brown base. Many times, darker-brown or black hair looks better with a warmer hue.

A light-medium brown base can look nice on many skin tones. If you have very dark skin, some pinks and reds may look better than just black hair. If you have very light skin, some warm shades may look better than pure white hair.
